Low-residency at VCFA means that college students spend time on campus every semester for a residency week and then spend the relaxation of the time working with a college advisor to create work they envision. Faculty advisors within the Graphic Design program serve as each guides and mentors, offering college students sources, texts, and principle to help deepen their design skills and interests. Students submit digital or printed “packets” every month to demonstrate their ongoing progress. There aren’t any online lessons or assignments in the conventional sense of a web-based schooling construction. The three-year MFA program in Graphic Design at VCFA is designed for students with backgrounds in liberal arts, fine arts, and sciences. In the three-year program, the first 12 months is designed to bolster students’ strengths and critical talents in typography, image making, and design historical past, principle, and authorship.
